Portobello Road è il cuore pulsante di Londra, il meltin pot per eccellenza, la mescolanza, la diversità, la vita brulicante.
Se ci finisci dentro ti ritrovi in un flusso che ti catapulta in un'altra epoca,
dove gli odori di gambero fritto, cannella, incenso e polvere si mescolano ai
ricordi di infanzie passate cullate da suoni che mutano ad ogni angolo.
Quello che ti colpisce è il tanto, il troppo, il casino di cianfrusaglie aggrovigliate
e accumulate, le stramberie, la paccottaglia, che ogni amante del vintage che
si rispetti non può che trovare adorabile.
Io a Portobello ci volevo andare da quando ho visto il film un pò datato della Disney "Pomi d'ottone e manici di scopa" quello dove Angela Lansbury (la nostra Jessica Fletcher della signora in giallo) è una specie di strega un pò strampalata.
Portobello è così, non puoi viverlo da turista, devi farne parte, divenirne parte.
Addentrarti in quelle viuzze dove trovi gente che vende 3 spille fatte con una lattina, perderti a cercare quel vinile che non credevi potesse ancora essere in circolazione, osservare, scrutare, cogliere frammenti di vita.

Le case delle bambole inglesi sono rinomate per le peculiarità delle rifiniture e dei particolari, io a Portobello non ne ho trovata una, ma l’assemblaggio di almeno dieci.
Ci sarebbe voluta un’ora solo per scoprirne le sorprese, così ho fatto un paio di scatti dei vari piani e ho scelto questa foto per ricordarmi di quel pomeriggio
speciale.

Whittington Hospital - ello allo allo, what have we here?
Shortly after taking this photo an 'official' from the hospital describing herself as being "from the Public Relations Dept" came out to me with a colleague and asked me why I was taking photos? I was so taken aback I stuttered something like I'm an amateur photographer who goes around the area where I live (and elsewhere) recording life as I see it for my own amusement and that of others if I can persuade them to look at them! I pointed out that I'm under no obligation to reveal my reasons for taking a photo in a public place so far as I know? I didn't get an answer to that or as to why they approached me in the first place. I advised them that they could already view a photo of the hospital on Flickr which I posted a couple of months ago. But look up into the centre of the photo and you will see two people looking out (assuming your eye sight is not too bad - view full size), as though conferring and making a phone call - wow are they paranoid or am I?! 26 July 2008

Corner Shop 27 July 08
Typical London corner shop. Many disappeared in the 1970's but in 90's many were opened up again and today they are abundant. They are usually one stop shops newsagents, grocers, tabbaconists, places to pay bills, get bus tickets and various other services. Many are open early in the morning to late at night with extended families providing the capital and the staff. Hard work but a great service!

Irish in London 27 July 08.
Irish contractor, Murphy, is a household name in London. The truck is passing the Boston which was one of the many Irish Pubs in the area when the area was populated by large numbers of Irish people. The demographics have changed and there are few predominantly Irish pubs in the area today.

Londra; Millennium bridge
Questa foto è stata scattata nell'Agosto 2007, mi trovavo di fronte al "Millennium bridge" ed ero super emozionata perchè ero diretta al Tate Modern, museo che da anni desideravo visitare, al contempo ero malinconica perchè in serata mi attendeva l'aereo per il rientro in Italia. Questa foto non solo mi dà la sensazione di quanto moderna sia questa città, ma anche della sua continua evoluzione (vedi le gru sullo sfondo).
