London N4. 8.55am 26 Sep 08. The Sobell Leisure Centre. Built in the 1970s and soon to be demolished because bigger is better?! There is local opposition but the Islington Council seem determined to go ahead - I suppose every politician has to have their 'legacy'! The issue for me is open space. We have very little of it here in Inner London and the new development will be very high density and completely change the spacial character of the area. There has been a so called consultation but there was no 'don't demolish - refurbish' option, or 'similar build retaining key features such as low and curvy' option. Maybe the recession will make them rethink!
